Accountants Who Care Charity

Accountants Who Care is the 2009 Charity Initiative for 2020 Canada. It was brought to us by our members, Todd and Carrie Jones of Port Williams, NS. Todd's brother is a Chiropractor who belongs to the charitable organization called Chiropractors with Compassion and this group of Chiropractors donates a portion of their fees from first time clients to the charity. Their funds go the charity Compassion Canada to fund child-based humanitarian projects in third world countries. In the 2008 Tax season, Todd and Carrie donated $10 for every 2007 tax return prepared in their office, to a local charity.

Todd and Carrie donated $4,260.

The 2020 Canada Accountants Who Care Charity builds upon their initiative and their experiences. We are asking Accounting Firms to donate a portion of fees received for every 2008 Tax return prepared (or a fixed amount for the season). Your donation would then be split between a local charity of your choice and Opportunity International, an organization that provides Micro-Financing to poor Entrepreneurs in third world areas. We believe that Opportunity International is a perfect fit for Accountants to support as small business owners and entrepreneurs are the life-blood of any accounting firm whether they are here in urban centers in Canada or in the mountain villages of Peru.

The Process

Accountants Who Care is not a registered charity per se but rather a service for SME Accounting firms to provide a collection conduit for your selected charity and to Opportunity International. Get together with your staff to choose a local charity. With registration, you can download desktop signage that lets your clients know of your commitment, both during Tax Season and afterwards. At the end of the tax season, send your donation to your local charity in your community and a cheque (made payable to Opportunity International Canada) to

2020 Canada

16-1375 Southdown Rd, Suite 135

Mississauga, ON, L5J 2Z1

We will forward all funds to Opportunity International and they will provide the Charitable Donation Receipt.

Opportunity International

Opportunity International has been helping small entrepreneurs in developing countries  with micro-financing loans for 35 years.

As the major world markets have fallen precipitously, we are noticing how the global credit crunch affects both rich and poor.

Discussions about the banking crisis can be heard in the backstreets of Kampala, Uganda almost as much as they can be heard at the TSX.  Recent events are also forcing Canadians to rethink their spending habits, and forcing some of our microfinance clients to make heart-rending decisions.

During times such as these, we are humbled by the remarkable generosity of our Canadian supporters. Several weeks ago, a donor phoned to say he was doubling his annual gift to the poor in light of the current market turmoil. OIC have also never known a time when so many volunteers stepped forward to help their cause with their events and activities.

Opportunity International has always taken a long-term approach to poverty reduction--enabling the entrepreneurial poor to start businesses and work their own way out of poverty. With them, we will continue to seek long-lasting change. Thank you for standing with the poor through your volunteer service, donations and support during these challenging times.
